‘Bye, Carson

By Jayne Perry

As Rodney stood on the balcony, watching the sea ripple and break beneath him and the breeze gently caressing his face, he found peace.  The first time he had felt that particular feeling in a long while.  He knew he would never accept Carson’s death, or that he was totally blameless, but he found that he was coming to terms with it.  Life went on, as much as he wished that he could turn back the hands of time, to change what had happened, to have gone on that fishing trip.  But it wasn't to be.   He missed his friend, one of the few people he felt to be his equal, not that he would ever have admitted that.

He finally admitted to himself, that things happen.  Things over which he had no control; that he wasn't omniscient.  It didn't stop him having regrets, but he knew deep down that he could never totally control all that was around him, no matter how much he tried.   It was this knowledge, that allowed him to slowly come to terms with all that had happened on that particular Sunday.

Turning slowly he retraced his steps back to the busy corridors of Atlantis.  And as he did so, he felt he could almost hear a voice on the breeze saying, "And about time too you daft…"
