Nightmare
By Jayne Perry
Rodney woke suddenly, his scream still echoing in his head and his
heart beating as though running a race. His sweat covered
blankets entangled around him, offering him little movement.
"Breathe....deep breaths," he whispered trying to calm himself.
His nightmares were getting worse. This time there was no John
Sheppard trying to kill him, but also no John Sheppard there to tell
him that everything would be okay, that he had to fight it, and keep
rowing. This time he had been alone with the whale surrounded by
the empty ocean, not even Atlantis or a coastline to give him a
direction to row in.
His sense of isolation had threatened to crush him, which surprised him
in a way. Before Atlantis he was used to being alone, isolated,
no friends to speak of, just colleagues and acquaintances. He was
never sure when that had changed, when Sheppard and Teyla, and even
Ronon, had managed to sneak under his radar. But they were more
than family to him, not that he would ever admit it to their faces.
Starting to feel more in control, Rodney slowly untangled himself and
made his way to the bathroom and quickly showered. He could still feel
the memory of the nightmare, unwilling to release it's hold on him. The
shower reminded him of the rain that had battered against him.
Before the nightmare could replay itself once more through his
conscious memory, he quickly dried himself and dressed as he knew that
trying to sleep would be an act of futility.
